Why Retainers After Braces or Aligners Matter

You’ve worked hard to get your smile just right—now let’s keep it that way! Retainers after braces or clear aligners  are the key to making sure your teeth stay in their new spots. In this guide, Dr. Gordon Honig and Dr. Lisa Honig explains what retainers do, how to care for them, and how long you’ll need to wear one.

What Is a Retainer?

A retainer is a custom-made device that helps keep your teeth from moving back to where they were before braces or aligners. After your treatment, your teeth need time to settle into place. Retainers help with that.

Here’s why you don’t want to skip wearing yours:

  • They hold your teeth in place so they don’t shift

  • They give your gums and jawbone time to adjust

  • They protect all the work you just finished with your braces

  • They keep your smile looking great for the long run

Types of Retainers

There are a few types of retainers, and your orthodontist will choose the one that works best for you:

1. Clear Plastic Retainers (Essix or Vivera)

  • Look a lot like clear aligners

  • Thin and almost invisible

  • Fit snugly over your teeth

  • Popular for being low-key and comfortable

2. Wire Retainers (Hawley)

  • Made with a metal wire and a plastic base

  • A little more noticeable but can be adjusted

  • Long-lasting and easy to clean

  • Can be made in fun colors or designs

3. Fixed Retainers (Bonded)

  • A thin wire glued to the back of your front teeth

  • Stays in place—you can’t remove it

  • Hidden from view

  • Great for people who might forget to wear a removable retainer

Sometimes people use a mix of these, like a clear retainer for the top teeth and a fixed one for the bottom.

Retainers After Braces: How Long Do You Need to Wear Them?

It depends on your case, but here’s a general idea:

Right After Treatment (First 3–6 Months)

  • Wear your removable retainer almost all day (20–22 hours)

  • Only take it out to eat, drink (anything but water), brush, and floss

  • This is the most important phase!

After That

  • You may switch to wearing it only at night

  • Some people need to wear it every night long-term

  • Everyone’s smile is different, so follow your orthodontist’s plan

The more you wear your retainer as directed, the better your results will last.

How to Take Care of Your Retainer

When You’re Not Wearing It

  • Keep it in a case so it doesn’t get lost or broken

  • Never wrap it in tissue—people often throw it away by mistake!

  • Don’t leave it in hot places (heat can ruin it)

  • Add your name to the case in case it gets misplaced

Keeping It Clean

If it’s removable:

  • Rinse it when you take it out

  • Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap

  • Use cool water (never hot)

  • Use special cleaning tablets now and then for a deeper clean

If it’s fixed:

  • Brush around the wire carefully

  • Use floss threaders or tiny brushes to clean under the wire

  • A water flosser can make things easier

When to Get a New Retainer

Retainers don’t last forever. Here are signs you might need a new one:

  • It feels too tight or too loose

  • You notice cracks, warping, or strong odors

  • It doesn’t fit like it used to

Typical replacement times:

  • Every 1–3 years for removable retainers

  • Vivera users usually get a new set every 6 months

Quick Tips

  • Keep it away from pets—dogs love to chew them!

  • Don’t expose it to heat—no dishwashers, hot cars, or boiling water

  • Bring it to check-ups so your orthodontist can make sure it still fits

  • Call us if it breaks or gets lost—we’ll help you right away
